Last night I had the pleasure of attending the media opening for Cirque du Soleil’s newest Big Top show, VOLTA, Atlanta. The weather was perfect, the city was sparkling, and the Moscow Mule’s were tasty.
I’ve been attending Cirque du Soleil shows since 2007. As a longtime fan, I have asked myself if the franchise can really impress me following iconic shows like Joya, Beatles LOVE, and Michael Jackson ONE. I can honestly say they all bring something unique and special to the table.
VOLTA Atlanta is no exception, and it’s playing at the Big Top through January 5th, 2020.
VOLTA Atlanta – A Post Apocalyptic Vibe and a Journey of Self Discovery
VOLTA is a brand new Big Top show and brand new to Atlanta so, I was pretty excited to see this performance. It’s the only Cirque du Soleil show that features extreme sports like BMX.
There’s no doubt that every Cirque show is magical, but right away the costuming caught my eye. It was shiny, it was quirky and in my opinion, had a very captivating post-apocalyptic vibe to it. Imagine the Hunger Games meets Tank Girl.
That’s exactly how the costuming done by Emmy Award winner Zaldy Goco, (famous for his work with Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani and on RuPaul’s Drag Race) made me feel about VOLTA. I couldn’t stop staring at it.

About the Show
The show opened with a very powerful scene where everyone had cell phones, seemingly floating by in their own kind of disillusioned world.
This type of visual delivered the setup for the personal journey that is VOLTA. In 2019 when we are all glued to our phones, voyeurs to the lives of others and showmen to those who view our perfect image that we so tediously curate for them, VOLTA comes with a strong message of self love.
The impactful story of VOLTA and its costuming draws you into a perceptibly wondrous world of acrobatics and progressive melodies as it follows the character WAZ, a game show contestant who has somehow lost touch with himself.
WAZ feels weird, like a black sheep and goes looking for acceptance, fame and love by joining a TV show. What he finds on his personal journey is that acceptance starts with oneself.
In a way, aren’t we all looking for acceptance and love? This is what makes VOLTA so relatable. WAZ ultimately finds that fame does not come with acceptance.
Instead, self-acceptance and embracing what makes you different is the only way to find true comfort in your own skin. And this is a message we all need to embrace.
Scene by scene I was enamored by the acrobatic performances perfectly and dramatically completed by their costumes and set into motion by a live band of vocalists, violinists, percussion and more.
Written by composer Anthony Gonzalez (M83), the music of VOLTA was created to invoke emotion and moods and without it, the narrative would be deflated.
In an age where everyone is trying to be their best self on social media, hiding their flaws and their true selves, VOLTA packs a relevant and powerful message.
Not only does the score drive the dramatic elements of the performance, but it opens our minds to conjure the meaning behind VOLTA. And that’s to be real, love who you are, own who you are and free yourself from the shackles of judgment from others.
