It’s not every day you can say that you took your kid to see a film adapted from the very first novel they ever read. Diary of a Wimpy Kid was in fact Gauge’s first ever read. And, it was the only book I could actually get him to read. Understandably so, it’s about the most relatable book a kid could ever read. So what did the film do for the book?
Diary of a Wimpy Kid – The Franchise
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid novel series was created from an online cartoon but more importantly, from the mind of author Jeff Kinney, and self-proclaimed real-life “wimpy kid”. Jeff has described his work as a representation of his own family and misadventures of that uber awkward prepubescent stage we all loved to hate.
After its initial release in 2007, Diary of a Wimpy Kid became instant gold spending almost three years on the New York Time’s children’s best seller list. And after millions of copies sold and a 225 million dollar global box office nut, everyone can say the wimpy kid laughed all the way to the bank. It even printed in 53 languages with the first copy in Latin given to the Pope. What does this say about being wimpy? We are all a bit wimpy in our lives. And according to the wimpy kid himself, lead actor Jason Drucker,
“Wimpy is the new cool.”
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul Review
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul is an ultimate mash-up of National Lampoons meets Malcolm in the Middle in 2017, but with that Greg Heffley magnetism that we all love. It brings the Heffleys on a 47-hour road trip from Hell fueled by mom’s (Alicia Silverstone) mission to bag the technology and bond, dad’s (Tom Everett Scott) inability to leave work at work, Roderick’s (Charlie Wright) big brother shenanigans, Manny’s (Dylan and Wyatt Walters) toddlerhood and Greg’s (Jason Drucker) impossibly strange inability to stay away from disaster.
It was hilarious and relatable for all audiences. Parents, kids, even toddlers are going to love this film. Before I saw the film you would never have convinced me in a million years to take a road trip with three of my kids without technology. The Long Haul changed that game for me. As a travel writer, I can appreciate a great travel story waiting to happen.
Go see Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul! You will fall in love with the new Heffleys and laugh off your seat! Every second of this film is an adventure.

Me and my hubby are so excited to see the movie! We have watched it over a hundred times and we still love it!
It is always nice to watch a good funny movie once in a while. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul is something I would really enjoy. Who doesn’t need a good laugh anyway!
I have got to take my son to see this! We need to read the book first though. It looks like such a hilarious story!
My son read the books when he was younger. I wonder just how well he’d like the movie compared to the books.
I am not all that familiar with Dairy of A Wimpy Kid, but I know that it has been around for a while now, It must be pretty good. I might go check it out.
My son isn’t quite old enough to watch these and understand but I will for sure be having him read the books when he becomes old enough.
