It’s been more than 150 years since the release of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and to this day it’s as popular as it was then. With its funny little poems, whimsical characters and obscurity, it’s a tale which has spanned generations before us and many to come. It’s one of those tales you shouldn’t ever try to make sense of, but rather let yourself go into its vortex of silliness. It’s one of my favorite fairy tales of all time. This is why I am so excited about the its Disney live-action sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass. I just can’t believe it’s been six years! And now the trailer is finally here:

I mean where else can babies turn into pigs, caterpillars dole out advice, flowers insult Alice and snooty purple striped cats disappear into thin air? Lewis Carroll’s tales have impacted generations so much that a whole exhibit in New York City (just finished) was done to showcase his work and their inspirations (don’t worry the original manuscript can be seen in the British Library). This is why I put together a fun little list of thought nibbles to better your life.

Everything You Need to Know in Life from Alice Through the Looking Glass

1. Do go through the ‘Looking Glass’.

Follow your impulses and see where it lands you. Alice doesn’t play by the conventional rules in life. She’s up for anything and is a risk taker. I’m not telling you to base jump, but do book that flight and travel, explore and see where the rabbit hole or the looking glass leads you.

2. Know who you are and you shall succeed.

Just like Alice and the Queen, Alice was not able to conquer this challenge until she knew who she was at heart. The sooner you figure out you, the sooner you can adapt and overcome.

3. Be silly and whimsical.

There’s no better tale which showcases silly and whimsical as this one. Everyone should let loose once in awhile, unwind and be silly.

4. Advice can come from the most unexpected places.

Even a tripping caterpillar with a chip on his shoulder can have good advice. Alice listened to his advice and figured out who she was when he said “Who are you”? Of course after some struggle, but in the end she overcame this hurdle and took advice from the most peculiar of characters.

5. Always make time to help your friends.

Alice spends her time trying to help the Mad Hatter in Alice Through the Looking Glass. She does so because she is selfless and genuine. And people who are selfless and genuine are always a success in life.

6. Believe in the madness, believe in the impossible.

Everything in Alice Through the Looking Glass seems impossible, but it came to pass that it all made some kind of logic in the end. Always believe in the impossible.

About Alice Through the Looking Glass

Alice travels back to Underland, the fantastic world realized by Director James Bobin and producers Joe Roth, Suzanne Todd, Jennifer Todd, Tim Burton and Executive Producer John G. Scotti where Alice (Mia Wasikowska) must travel back in time to save the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) for another all out fantasy adventure originally created by Lewis Carroll.

After years of sailing at sea, Alice finds the looking glass and inevitably ends up in Underland where she meets up with friends the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen), Absolem (Alan Rickman), Cheshire Cat (Fry) and of course the Mad Hatter. Alice finds herself on a quest to to save Hatter before it’s too late. The White Queen (Anne Hathaway) and the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) are also back for this adventure.

My Take

I’m pretty excited about this. Alice Through the Looking Glass is my favorite of the Lewis Carroll books, and with the movie magic of Tim Burton and Director James Bobin, I’m really stoked to see how crazy this adventure can get. I especially love Tim Burton’s work and think the story itself is quite the playground for his imagination.

I especially love Alice in Wonderland and kind of wished this one would have come out a lot sooner, but I got a first look at the costuming for this film back at D23 EXPO and they are nothing short of amazing. I’m not in the least bit surprised of course, especially after getting up close and personal with the Cinderella costumes at the premiere. Disney does it right, there’s no doubt about that.

New Characters

  • The Mad Hatter’s father – Zanik Hightopp (Rhys Ifans)
  • Time – (Sacha Baron Cohen)
