Ambiance…
The Jewel of New Hampshire
If you have your sights on New Hampshire and your heart on luxury, then you need to rest your head at the Bedford Village Inn & Restaurant.
When thinking of one word that describes this historic property, I think “ambiance”. During our recent visit to New Hampshire, the Bedford Village Inn was nice enough to have us on the last night of our trip. This storybook farmhouse and barn, with it’s fine dining and history, made for a perfect ending to our last night in legendary New England.
It was nearing twilight when we pulled into the Bedofrd Village Inn. I was immediately impressed with the lush landscaping and fall harvest warmth of this little property. Cradled by rolling hills marked with vibrant fall colors, this was once the site of a working farm, historically known as the “Gordon farm”. The Inn is home to a private historic 8-room residence named the “Woodbury Cottage“, the oldest house in Bedford, along with fourteen well appointed guest suites.
The Woodbury Cottage, built in 1763, was once a homestead to John Gordon a prideful caretaker who cherished his property. He lived and loved here, and even had most of his fourteen children here. The lobby of the Inn, which is the original barn, reveals three stories held by the very beams that it was constructed with in 1810. The lobby also pays homage to its original practice of its “Milk Room” with antique “milking” decor. The room, now a formal sitting area with coffee bar, is delicately illuminated with soft lighting and a warm grand fireplace.

I was in love with this property all ready. It was dreamy, it was soft and inviting, and the staff was hospitable and eager to tend to my every need. My only complaint is that I wasn’t staying longer, and I hadn’t even been to my room yet!
Dusty at the front desk was nice enough to walk us to our room and help us with our bags, (it’s those kind of details that you only find in small properties that are the finishing touches of hospitality and make for the most memorable experiences). I was anticipating a nice cozy room, what I didn’t know is that it was a nice, cozy, luxury, apartment-suite overlooking the string-lit courtyard and gazebo. Smitten.

My four poster king size bed i’m convinced was made from clouds, turned down with a home made chocolate chip cookie…still warm! I loved the huge desk in the living room next to the double sided wood burning fireplace. There was a selection of magazines, a Keurig coffee maker, Bose system, complementary bottled water and a wine offering for a small fee. The icing on the cake (and always my tell all sign) Gilchrist & Soames bathroom amenities. With all of these details, the Bedford Village Inn is quite possibly the jewel of New Hampshire. All of these perfectly well-planned offerings were leaving me very impressed, but I had no idea how impressed I would be until I headed over to the “Dining Room”, the Inn’s 3-star 4-diamond restaurant with adjacent Tavern.

I poked my head into the Dining Room and gleamed at the fine decor and soft lighting. This was the kind of place where you make memories, where the words “will you marry me” are probably nervously uttered more often than not. This was that place. The most perfect place for the best occasions. Dressed in jeans with camera in tow, I headed for the Tavern reminiscent of a hunting lodge with a warm “come on in” vibe. We shared the Skirt Steak Quesadillas, Corks Fried Olives, and the Tavern Sliders, all deliciously crafted by the hand of Executive Chef, Benjamin Knack.

My last night in legendary New England was flawless. Full of wine, great food, and smitten by the ambiance and hospitality of New England’s best kept secret, the Bedford Village Inn & Restaurant, I was off to my suite for some down time by the fire.
