The Best Movies to See in 2016

Crank up your speakers, put your headphones in and get ready to watch some of the coolest trailers for the best movies to see in 2016.

February 2016 6 Films

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies – February 5th

While keeping the classic look of a Jane Austen novel the film brings in the zombie world effortlessly. It’s not some cheesy movie that hands untrained women weapons which they then flounce around with. These are trained and skilled slayers, which is integral to their survival.

‘My daughters are trained for battle sir, not the kitchen,’ turning the 18th century ideas of women on its head.

Deadpool – Feb 12th

I love that we start with Wade Wilson’s back story of why he becomes Deadpool. For those of you who aren’t big comic book readers it gives us a reason to root for him and get a sense of his character.

They did really well bringing what could have been a very constraining suit for Deadpool into reality. Since we don’t really have any other facial featured other than his eyes, it could have played poorly.

The fight sequences look amazing, let’s just hope we haven’t seen the only good bits of this film in this trailer. This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

Divergent: Allegiance – February 18th

I am so stoked for this one. If you are already a Divergent fan you of course will be counting the days to this release. This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

The Witch – February 26th

Based in puritan New England in the 1600’s, The Witch is a folktale which stems loosely from the history Salem Witch Trials. It’s definitely creepy, if you’re into horror.

I’m looking forward to seeing some more witch action. I feel like we have a lot of the ghost stuff out there lately but not tons on witches.

Gods of Egypt – February 26th

While this film is not catching the best from critics I still think it’s worth seeing. It’s always fun to watch epic mythology-based films.

The trailer shows a lot of CGI but will it pan out with the action-adventure? Still hanging on this one but definitely on our list.

March 2 Films

Zootopia – March 4th

Who doesn’t love a good poke at the DMV? Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps is the perfect voice the fast talking and eager police rabbit.

We don’t know what she’s solving in this trailer but by her rush and the 48 hour time limit we can only hope it moved the story along quickly. I’m already taken by the energetic police bunny.

The Little Prince – February 18th

Based on the book of the same name, this timeless classic brings the hearts and minds of adults and children together. One of my favorite stories of all time.

I am very excited to see this with my son.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – March 25th

https://youtu.be/yViIi3gie2c

Stemming from the fact that Man of Steel wasn’t the best Superman movie that could have been made I have reservations about this film. The casting of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor has me worried as well.

He maybe great at pretending to be Mark Zuckerberg, but that doesn’t mean he can helm Superman’s best known villain. However, I’ll still see this because if it works, it’ll be fantastic!

This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

April – 2 Films

The Jungle Book – April 15th

Hopefully, the film is a different take than the well known animated film from 1967. The visual effects look amazing being that I’m sure a lot of the film was green screened.

This is a classic tale which I feel has never truly been given the movie magic it deserves. I’m excited to see if it holds as much drama as the book. This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War – April 22nd

With the departure of Kristen Stewart from this franchise, we’ve gained some awesome talent! Adding Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt to the ensemble was a fantastic idea.

It’s got tones of Lord of the Rings and Hunger Games in its style. Visually it looks incredible. The fantastic costuming comes from Colleen Atwood known for the former Snow White and the Huntsman, Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, Arrow, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them  to name very few.

As a huge fan of costume design I am completely stunned by this one and am really looking forward to it. This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

May – 3 Films

Captain America: Civil War – May 6th

The second trailer, just released!

Being that Captain America: The Winter Solider was so incredible, I’m expecting this one to be just as amazing. With all the setup in Avengers: Age of Ultron, this should be the payoff movie.

I love that they’re keeping the Cap and Natasha friendship going strong while also adding in Bucky as a good guy. These new teams will bring the Marvel Cinematic Universe up a notch.

This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

X-Men: Apocalypse – May 27th

The second trailer, just released!

With such a large ensemble cast I’m hoping the new characters don’t get lost in the shuffle. I’m really looking forward to Psylocke since we’ve seen a few clips of Olivia Munn practicing her fighting skills.

James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender I’m sure will be awesome per usual at this point. And it seems like we’ll be staying in one time period this time around!

Alice Through The Looking Glass – May 27th

Official second trailer, just released!

Everyone seems to have issues with these films. They are completely different from the Alice in Wonderland we are used to.

Still, I think Alice Through the Looking Glass is very much more Bobbin than Burton, and my love of fairy tales refuses for me to not see this movie. Plus, the costuming is incredible.

June – 2 Films

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows – June 3rd

Trailer #2 Just released!

To me these films are so different from when I was a kid. Still, I have faith in Out from the Shadows as it looks much better than the first installment.

My kid really liked the film too, so it’s safe for the 2016 list so far.

Warcraft – June 10th

Lots of CGI but a major nerd favorite. A lot of Warcraft fans excited about this one. I’m not a Warcraft player but I have a lot of fans who are, so this one’s for you.

July – 4 Films

The Legend of Tarzan – July 1st

The second trailer, just released!

In a previous article  we talked about The Legend of Tarzan and his corn cob abs. A classic tale told again with all the movie magic of today but from a different angle as Tarzan returns to the Jungle.

Everyone is talking about former True Blood neck biter Alexander Skarsgard and his shredded physique for the film. I’m excited to see if the story line is as popular with critics.

The BFG – July 1st

Very excited for this reboot by Disney. It has somewhat of a NeverEnding Story vibe in the trailer. Based on the book with the same title, this one is still a bit of a secret.

Love that giants are being brought into pop culture. There are so many great myths and legends about giants to share this year! This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

Official trailer just released!

Star Trek Beyond – July 23rd

Captain James Tiberius Kirk (Pine), Spock (Quinto), and the rest of the U.S.S. Enterprise crew return in the third installment of the rebooted franchise, which will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek.

Plot details are currently unknown. If you’re a ‘Trekkie’ you’re going to this. This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

Ghostbusters – July 15th

This reboot brings a traditional movie critic war to pop culture, but I think it’s going to be funny with the casting of Melissa McCarthy and Kristin Wiig.

Plus they are bringing in the classics Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver.

August – 2 Films

Suicide Squad – August 5th

A government agency recruits some of the deadliest villains in DC Comics lore to embark on dangerous missions. This film will be a continuation of WB’s shared DC cinematic universe.

A must see for comic to film fans. I’ll be there for sure. This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

Pete’s Dragon – August 12th

Official Trailer Just Released

We learned of this film back at D23 in August of this year. A reboot of the original Pete’s Dragon, it looks pretty cool with live action mixed with animation.

Really looking forward to seeing the trailer on this. We still don’t know if it’s a musical like the original.

October – 1 Film

Underworld 5: Next Generation

No Trailer Yet – This movie has been pushed back until January 2017. Underworld: Next Generation will reportedly continue the story of Underworld: Awakening, in which vampire Selene (Beckinsale) woke from a cryogenic sleep to find herself in a future world where the existence of vampires and werewolves had become public knowledge.

If you are an Underworld franchise fan, you’ll want to see this one for sure. This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

November – 4 Films

Doctor Strange – November 4th

Doctor Strange Trailer World Premiere

Doctor Strange Official Trailer 2

I love that Marvel is bringing in a singular to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Dr. Strange being once a total jerk now seeks a fate which turns him to help rather than hurt as he fights against evil.

Based on the comic book. This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

Trolls – November 4th

We know little about this film other than it’s based on the creepy yet addictive ‘Trolls’ we loved in middle school, it’s animated and will be hairy. \

Not sold, but REALLY looking forward to the trailer.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – November 18th

Newly Released Teaser Trailer

Well this one is a given. The whole Harry Potter loving universe will be piling up in theaters to see its release as the latest installment of book to films from famed author J.K. Rowling.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is her first official screenwriting. We are all very eager to see it. This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

Moana – November 23rd

Moana Official TV Trailer

Moana Olympics TV Spot Trailer

So excited for this as we saw clips in the closed screening at D23 Expo. The newest installment to the family of Disney Princesses, Moana brings us to the ancient world of Oceana Mythology.

Very excited to see this film and happy that Disney is bringing Hawaiian tales our way. This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

December – 3 Films

Star Wars: Rogue One – December 16th

Second Trailer Just Released!

Just released trailer! We know it’s amazing. We know its top secret. You know you’re going to see it. The end. This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

Assassin’s Creed – December 21st

Just released trailer! Another big one for gaming fans.

Mrs. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – December 25th

This movie is based on a bunch of old creepy pictures, directed by Tim Burton and has a script written by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass).

Not only is the name of it compelling, but the creative direction looks very dark and true to Burton’s form. I’m very excited for this book to film. This is in the top 15 movies to see in 2016.

This is it kids. The best movies to see in 2016 which together with Christa Thompson we rounded up for your viewing pleasure. Keep an eye out for all the exciting trips we uncover based on these and our good reads list for 2016.
