Game of Thrones Season 5 Film Locations in Spain — Alcazar of Seville as Dorne

The Alcazar in Seville is simply stunning! With all its magnificent pavilions, palace interiors, courtyards, outdoor gardens, all the best artisans and craftsmen around Spain and even Europe were hired to build this elaborate Spanish Alcazar (palace).

The palace is huge and lavish in its interior and exterior spaces and there is an endless supply of water features, fountains, and statue displays. So many details, elaborate crafting, and mathematical prowess were incorporated into the building that it is no wonder why GoT chose this location to embody Dorne.

The Castell de Santa Florentina is located in the region of Catalonia, in a town known as Canet de Mar. This castle is known to Game of Thrones addicts as Horn Hill and the current home of Samwell Tarly.

The castle was constructed in the 11th century but was expanded during the 14th. Ferrer de Canet was an adviser to the Aragon’s king during the time period, as well as a noble knight, and he was responsible for adding fortifications that were designed to keep the castle safe from pirate attacks.

Episode three of the sixth season is when viewers received their first glimpse of the Tower of Joy. Known as the Castle of Zafra, it is perched atop a sandstone outcrop in Guadalajara. With an altitude of 1,400 meters, this castle is one of the unique sights that a visitor will ever lay eyes on. It’s simply a must-see for all the fans!

Bardenas Reales Badlands to dedicated Game of Thrones viewers will look like the Dothraki Sea. In reality, this location is actually a Spanish national park, in addition to a Unesco Biosphere Reserve. What most viewers do not know is that the area contains the largest military zone in all of Western Europe. Fighter planes that travel at a rate that breaks the sound barrier can often be seen overhead.

While this place can certainly be summed up as a badland, it is the furthest thing from a desert. Fields of gorse, rosemary, and thyme can be found in this region, as well as wild orchids. The location may appear desolate to those of us who see it on HBO, but there is a great deal of natural beauty, simply waiting to be discovered by curious visitors!

  3. Actually the writer has the history of Alcazar completely incorrect. It was not modeled in the Moorish style, it is in fact a Moorish palace to begin with. Alcazar was initially built by the Almohad dynasty, the most intricate inscriptions and arabesques are from the Moorish Islamic period.
