We’ve all known about Skull Island Reign of Kong for some time now. It’s been one of the most talked-about new theme park rides and now it’s finally open. I know many of us fondly remember the old ride from Universal Studios, Kongfrontation. Well, let’s just say King Kong has gotten a serious upgrade and Universal Orlando is most definitely doing it right. We just got a sneak peek of the ride and all I can say is OMG!
Skull Island Reign of Kong
Skull Island Reign of Kong is the newest ride at Universal Studios Orlando and it does not disappoint. This multi-dimensional attraction is truly a way to bridge the gap between the generation of Kong past and the new generation of King Kong fans.
The adventure begins as guests are transported deep into a mysterious world, where their mission is to discover creatures of unknown origin with the 8th Wonder Expedition Company, the research team leading the excursion. After braving ancient temple ruins and encountering hostile natives, they board a massive 40-foot-long, 17-ton expedition vehicle to navigate the increasingly foreboding terrain.
The specially designed expedition vehicle, which operates on a completely trackless ride system, takes guests deeper into the ominous island, where they soon find themselves in the midst of a brutal struggle between beasts of unimaginable size and ferocity.
Then, as those creatures turn on the expedition, there is an even more enormous, earth pounding presence. It is Kong – in the flesh. Towering nearly three stories tall, he is so close that you can feel his breath and sense his emotion. But is he friend or foe?
So What Did We Think?
This ride is AMAZING! There’s so much going on (in the best possible way) that I probably need to ride it 3 or 4 more times just to catch everything. The queue is so well done – the attention to detail alone makes you feel like you’re really on Skull Island and not smack in the middle of Orlando, Florida.
I think the best way to describe this ride is like Michael Bay meets King Kong. The ride is big, full of the best ride effects I’ve ever seen and is honestly and truly a little scary. There is a group of ferocious dinosaurs, giant bug-like creatures, and of course, King Kong himself. You’re right in the middle of a battle of beast vs beast and it feels really REAL! I screamed many times and may have closed my eyes a time or two. If you ride any ride at Universal Orlando, it has to be Skull Island Reign of Kong!
