OH MY GOD I am SOOOOOO flickin excited for The BFG! YES! YES! YES! The trailer opens with a dramatic narrative of a little girl who’s frightened by the small hours of the night. Just as she’s sharing her story, the BFG reaches in and grabs her.
Okay let’s back this up starting with, BFG stands for “Big Friendly Giant”. In case you don’t remember the original story, this is a reboot of Roald Dahl’s (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) 1989 animated film based on the 1982 book.
It’s the story of a young girl named Sophie who’s been taken from her orphanage by the BFG who’s been abandoned by his friends because of his lack of mean behavior.

A Closer Look at The BFG
The BFG is a culmination of three of the greatest storytellers of all time. Roald Dahl, Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg brings the beloved classic to life and I couldn’t be more excited. Spielberg says about Roald Dahl,
I think it was kind of genius of Roald Dahl to be able to empower the children. It was very, very brave of him to introduce that combination of darkness and light which was so much Disney’s original signature in a lot of their earlier works like in ‘Dumbo,’ ‘Fantasia,’ ‘Snow White’ and ‘Cinderella,’ and being able to do scary, but also be redemptive at the same time and teach a lesson, an enduring lesson, to everyone, it was a wonderful thing for Dahl to have done, and it was one of the things that attracted me to want to direct this Dahl book,”
The 24-foot Big Friendly Giant is an outcast who lives in a cave. While the other giants are even bigger, scarier and have been known to eat humans, he is much more gentle. After kidnapping Sophie from her orphanage, he takes her to Giant Country. Frightened at first, she comes to find The BFG as kind and charming. But it doesn’t take long for the mean giants to catch on and soon Sophie and the BFG must warn the Queen of England. Starring Rebecca Hall, Mark Rylance, Bill Hader.
I’m so glad we’re revisiting legends of giants again with The BFG and in 2018 with Gigantic. These mythical creatures have left a footprint of tales in many parts of Europe. Believe it or not, even a physical trail can be linked to them. The mystery and awe which surrounds this mythical race of beings is nothing short of fantastic.
With a director like Spielberg and a screenplay by Melissa Mathison (E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial) I can’t imagine this film being short of incredible. Spielberg calls it,
a story about friendship, it’s a story about loyalty and protecting your friends and it’s a story that shows that even a little girl can help a big giant solve his biggest problems.”
The BFG is in theaters everywhere on July 1, 2016
