When I was a child I wanted to be a mermaid. I think it had something to do with the movie Splash that made me want it so badly. Had I grown up near the beaches in Perth, Australia, I may have actually become one. I still get all giddy when I see a dreamy coastline and smell that salty air. So, a few years ago I started looking for the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Wouldn’t you know, I found most of them on the beaches in Perth, Australia. Perth is a perfect place for swimmers who love the beach. The waves are near nonexistent. The shimmering water is clear-blue and, in my opinion, a paradise for the mythical mermaid.

I mean, after all, if you can’t be a mermaid, you might as well swim like one. Here are the most fairytale-like beaches in Perth, perfect for those with a mermaid soul.

The Basin on Rottnest Island

If you want to mix your magical day with a dose of wildlife, this peaceful swimming hole is perfect. Surrounded by a reef, it’s a great snorkeling spot due to the diverse marine life as well as a great swimming and sunbathing area.

Don’t worry, sharks usually cannot enter the basin and there are lifeguards to monitor the area, just in case. You even have your choice of serene shady spots or bright sunny areas on the soft white sand if you want to relax on the beach like a mermaid.

The world’s happiest animal, the quokka, calls the Basin home.  Mainly active at night like other marsupials, the quokka or short-tailed scrub wallaby is about the size of a domestic cat and is herbivorous with cute round ears and tiny paws.

So, don’t be afraid of this adorable creature and don’t feed them, no matter how much they beg.

It has a village named with my last name too, which makes it extra cool. Thompson Bay is just a short walk away and there is a beach walk and many places to eat and watch the people, boats, and ferry.

Also, there are some handy free things to do in the area as well, and remember to check out the lighthouse.

South Cottesloe Beach

If you want to bask in the sun like a mermaid, then South Cottesloe Beach is your spot. Its tranquil clear waters will keep you floating into a fairytale daydream. Prepare yourself for the steps down to the shore though.

Still, totally worth it to see the home of the endangered leafy sea dragon.

There are also plenty of activities like surfing or bike trails to entertain the active beach-goer. Spend a day at the beach then go eat while enjoying a spectacular view of the Indian Ocean.

Parakeet Bay, Rottnest Island

I’ve always been fascinated by places named after wild animals. Much like Parakeet Bay. It just rolls off the tongue nicely like, “I spent the day at Parakeet Bay.”

Great for swimming because of shallow, clear waters and the scenery is absolutely hypnotizing. Relax and take it all in, feel the breeze of the sea, and don’t forget to snap some photos of the amazing landscape all around you.

Yanchep Lagoon

Very similar to the Basin on Rottnest Island, Yanchep Lagoon is surrounded by a reef so it stays very, very calm. Total relaxing mermaid vibes here for sure. And a great picture spot as well, as it has absolutely gorgeous scenery.

It is a paddling and snorkeling dream and the naturally formed lagoon even protects swimmers and snorkelers from any large creatures that bite as well as from any dumping waves. Relax and enjoy yourself.

Leighton Beach

Perhaps one of the most liked beaches in Perth is Leighton Beach. It has a large, white, sandy shore where the shimmering water stays very calm and the sunset is gorgeous, so don’t miss it!

You can find a variety of dining options close by as well which makes it a great spot for an exciting all-day affair.

Whether you are swimming, snorkeling, laying out in the glittering sun, windsurfing, or kite surfing, this beach has something entertaining for everyone. It even includes a dedicated spot for your pet to enjoy the beach with you.

Fairytales are fantastic, and travel can be as beautiful as a dream too. You can make your trip to Perth your own perfect fairytale.

Just pack a bag and hire Perth airport transfers to be on your way to creating your own wonderful stories and memories. Good luck choosing your mermaid paradise on one or all of these stunning beaches in Perth.

Relax, unwind, have fun, and enjoy your stay. And no matter where you go, don’t forget to close your eyes and say a little blessing for all marine life!
