  1. Howe Caverns

Bringing in more than 100,000 guests per year, Howe Caverns is the largest public cave in the Northeast. This cave formed several million years ago and is 156 ft. below ground.

 

Howe Caverns Inc. offers a variety of tours, but the most popular is a 90-minute walking tour followed by a boat ride. You can even stay overnight at the Howe Caverns Motel in a beautiful room overlooking the Helderberg Plateau.

This list wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Seabreeze Amusement Park. With over 70 attractions, you’ll find plenty of fun for both kids and adults. Nestled in Rochester, this historic park offers stellar views of Lake Ontario. It is one of only 13 trolley parks still operating in the U.S.

 

  1. Adirondack State Park

For a true city escape, head to Adirondack State Park in the tiny mountain village of Lake Placid. Boasting over 2.6 million acres of land, Adirondack has plenty of hiking, biking, and skiing trails. Established as “Genesee County Poor Farm” in 1826, this asylum is for the thrillseekers. Tour the haunted 60,000 square foot facility that was once home to orphans, widowed women and their children, the disabled, the mentally ill, and minor criminals. The more adventurous can even bring their gear in for a ghost hunt.

Near the Southern tip of the ever-popular Seneca Lake is Finger Lakes. This region is home to the number one rated winery in all of upstate New York: Lakewood Vineyards. Take in the vineyard’s delicious elegant yet accessible wine on a 45-acre peach and apple orchard.

 

  1. Yaddo Gardens

Yogis- rejoice! The picturesque Yaddo Gardens is the perfect place to get your zen on. This 400-acre estate is full of garden beds, sculptures, and fountains filling two terrace spaces. The Yaddo Gardens were a gift from an upstate investor to his wife in 1899.
