Walt Disney Reveals Moana for 2016, South Pacific Oceania Myth

Not that we needed an excuse to go to Hawaii, but now we have a great one, Moana. Walt Disney Animation Studios released plans for the all new CG-animated comedy-adventure, “Moana”. Moana is about a free-spirited youth with a mission to fulfill her ancestors quest. The film brings pack partners Ron Clements and John Musker of “The Little Mermaid”, “The Princess Frog”, and “Aladdin”).

Moana and Oceania Mythology

“Moana” dives into the mythology of Oceania in the ancient South Pacific and sets the adventurous teen on a mission to find a fabled island. Her mythology-packed adventure brings her to team up with demi-god, Maui on an ocean voyage where they meet mythological sea creatures, mythical underworlds and ancient folklore.

This is pretty exciting for the Fairytale Traveler. There are loads of Oceania Mythology to explore, and you can bet we’ll be going on a few voyages of our own to explore these fantastic stories. Moana takes us to the South Pacific to places like Hawaii, Cook Islands, the Marquesas Islands, the Ellice Islands (now Tuvalu), Tokelau, Tonga, Tahiti (Otaheite), and Samoa. Fuji is also included in this area, because a large proportion of its population is of Polynesian descent. The Hawaiian islands are at the apex of the Polynesian triangle with New Zealand and Easter Island at the base corners.

Check back as we research the fantastic stories and prep for some amazing journeys to explore this intriguing mythology.

Moana is scheduled to hit theaters in 2016.
