Popular Films that Feature Blackjack – One of America’s Oldest Card Games

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino card games and it’s been around since the 1600s. I play it, my dad played it and my Grandpa played it. It’s one of the simplest card games, also known as ‘21’, and easy in theory, but often a lot more difficult to master in reality. Due to it being a classic, and well-established game, it has had sustained popularity across the globe for many, many generations.

While some play the game simply for fun, most blackjack games take place in a casino, where betting is regulated and legitimate. However, nowadays with land-based casinos losing a bit of momentum, many are choosing to play their favorite casino games online. For instance, the mrgreen blackjack game is a fantastic one to try out as you can play either online or through their mobile app. With blackjack’s continuous popularity, we have seen it as the topic and focus of many popular films through the years. Today we will have a look at a few of them.

These Three Films Feature the Most Infamous of Card Games

21

Based on a true story, 21 is probably the most well-known blackjack movie to have been made. The fast-paced and exciting 2008 film starring Kevin Spacey and Jim Sturgess. It also stars other big names such as Laurence Fishburne and Kate Bosworth. The movie is based on the true story, turned super popular book entitled ‘Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions’, by author Ben Mezrich. It’s a brilliant casino heist movie, and it really highlights the ingenuity you need to be able to count cards and orchestrate a plan as they did. If you have not seen this movie already, go and watch it as soon as you can!

The Gambler

This recent, 2014 movie starring the very talented Jessica Lange, Brie Larsen and Mark Wahlberg tells the story of a literature professor, played by Wahlberg, who has a second life that he keeps secret: he is a gambler. His gambling is driven by a rather bizarre outlook of having all or nothing. The movie poignantly shows the chaos that ensues when the professor borrows money from some dubious men, who threaten to kill everyone in his personal life if he does not pay them back. He now has to rely on his blackjack skills to win.

Rain Man

The 1988 film that picked up a casual two Golden Globes, and four Oscar awards, is last –but certainly not least on our list! Starring the amazing Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. The story revolves around a savant and his brother who decide to on an adventure that features some of the most iconic scenes of blackjack ever played in a movie. Hoffman’s character known as Rain Man is able to use his incredible mathematical skills to count cards in a very effective way.

It is obvious that blackjack’s popularity has made it an activity that is featured in many amazing movies. It is a great game to play and these movies make us appreciate it greatly. Not to mention, it’s always good fun having a few friends over for blackjack.
